On this day in 1889, John T Reid played in the first mixed foursome recorded in the US. Saint Andrew's Golf Club in Yonkers, New York was the host.
John Reid and John Upham were two of the originally founders of the club in 1888, and the original clubhouse is still in use today, preserving the history of the course forever.
On this day in 1992, Dottie Pepper won the Kraft Nabisco Championship in a playoff over Juli Inkster. Pepper won the major tournament twice, and captured a total of 17 LPGA tournament victories during her career.
The famous golfer Ted Ray was born on this day in 1877. During his career, Ray won 2 major titles (1912 Open Championship, 1920 US Open), and earned top-10's in the Open Championship a total of 12 times. He was many times overshadowed by the "Great Triumverate" of the day (Vardon, Braid, and Taylor), but was obviously a great player in his own right.
On this day in 1966, Marilynn Smith won the Louise Suggs Delray Beach Golf Invitational. Her 54 hole final of 211 was good enough to capture the $1,275 first prize.
On March 26, 1951, Patty Berg won the Sandhills Open, played at the Southern Pines Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Before Berg dominated the professional circuit, she captured 29 amateur titles. She later turned pro and helped establish what is now the LPGA tour.
