On this day in 1953, Ben Hogan made history by breaking the scoring record at Augusta. He shot a -14 274 to win the tournament by 5 shots over Ed Oliver and Lloyd Mangrum. First prize was $4,000.
On this day in 1948, Claude Harmon notched his one and only Masters victory. Claude won 10 professional events during his career, including 2 on the PGA Tour. He also grabbed T3 honors at the US Open and PGA Championship.
On this day in 1949, Sam Snead won his first Masters. He finished second behind Ralph Guldahl in 1939, but with weekend rounds of 67-67, he finally got a victory at Augusta. Snead beat Johnny Bulla and Lloyd Mangrum by 3 shots to take the $2,500 prize. The '49 tournament was actually the first year in which the green jacket was awarded.
