1) Stricker
2) Rory McIlroy
3) J. Dufner
4) Lefty
5) really, who cares.

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 2 weeks ago #33391

Westwood
Dufner
Rory

If it's really going to be super firm and fast as they said then I think it increases the chances of both Tiger and Phil by some margin.....and I would throw those two in to my box trifecta.

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 2 weeks ago #33403

I'll go with:

Stricker
Dufner
Furyk

Byrd may have a good shot too, but those are my top three.

Is it true the winner get a free lesson with Martin? Or did I just start a nasty rumor?

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 2 weeks ago #33416

I'd love Westwood to win it. Out and out the most consistent player tee to green for a few years, but woeful at times with the flat stick.

Like everyone else I quite fancy Dufner too, but I'd love Mannasero to win as he has such a pure pivot driven action.

I can't see Rory doing anything if it's setup properly.

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 1 week ago #33474

Love US Opens with tough setups. As Trevino said: "If you don't set up a golf course like that, then a guy can hit it all over the place and still win the golf tournament. So, you didn't identify the best player that week."

Love to see incompetent pros struggling like hell. Love to see their faces when they're around +10. This is the test of true golf and true swings that bring consistency. I wish every tournament is like this, people would see on their own eyes that playing -20 on a pampered course doesn't make a golf god oot of an incompetent Fowlers, Donalds, Mickelsons, etc.
True golf is played like Furyk plays -- pivot-subdued swing with eliminating distal parts impact.
Too bad that such tournaments are very rare nowadays -- there is no other method to separate pampered handsy whinners over true consistent golfers.

Cheers

This young "Hoss" is interesting....like a younger, calmer version of Monty.

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 1 week ago #33484

Dariusz, looks like our pick Furyk is doing well. I count 3 bogeys and 4 birdies over 36 holes. That's quality US Open golf right there. If he keeps that up, he'll have the trophy. Tiger is making birdies but also making more bogeys.

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 1 week ago #33488

Furyk's playing well for sure, and the 17yr old Hossler was actually leading outright at one point!... Mahan's sitting at +3 right now (T9).. I think he'll make a move tomorrow into the top 5

Yep, Tim. I do hope he wins this event.

BTW, nice to see a few whackers out of contention.

Martin's right about this 17-y.o amateur. He's got a big future. Moreover, as I see 3 amateurs made the cut -- hopefully a bit of Jones's, Venturi's and Stranahan's spirit rebuilds. Our Mr. Burke surely can say a lot of things about all three of them.

Cheers

Major Tournaments: Masters, US Open, Open Championship, PGA

TOUGH Setup Majors: US Open, Bad Weather Open Championship

EASY Setup Majors: Masters, Good Weather Open Championship, PGA

It sure is more interesting when the setup is tough. Par is an accomplishment, I don't even care. Easy Birds are boring.

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 1 week ago #33519

Well, I feel for Furyk...leaked oil down the stretch. Tournament's not quite over, but hey, I'm proud of my picks (see earlier post)!

Stricker - T15
Dufner - T5
Furyk - Looks to be T3

Good ballstrikers on top...that's what we like to see!

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 1 week ago #33528

I wasn't expecting Jim to hit that tee shot on 16, most unlike him.

Re: US Open - Favorites? 11 months, 1 week ago #33529

It was good to see a US Open contested on a course set up more like courses were set up years ago. It did expose the state of ballstriking today. I think Simpson hit 55% of the fairways. Not bad, but you would expect an Open winner to be up around 70%. It is remarkable that Ernie was a shot or two away from winning while hitting only 33% of the fairways. Still would like to see it set up where a shot that goes into the rough is a .75 or so penalty. When I was watching as a kid in the 70s and 80s it was rare that a player could advance the ball onto the green from the rough. Occasionally it happened if he was within 150 yards, and he could run it up. All in all, however, it was nice to see the bomber/wedge crowd struggle.

Simpson deserved to win. He played the best on the final day.
