Hello, Jessy V. I was a District Manager for the Ben Hogan back in the late 60's and early 70's. We sold a bunch of the great Special Sand Wedges. I think they came out shortly after Ben Hogan started the company. which was in the last 50's or early 60's. Wilson used to sell a sand wedge called the R90 that was very popular but dropped it when they started making the Fluid Feel sand wedge to go with the Fluid Feel irons. The story was told that Wilson had a lot of R90 forgings, the Hogan company bought them, and turned them into the Special Sand Iron. They were forged and when I was with the company they had the Apex wedge shaft.

Hope you see this,
Linksmeister

Glen,

Thanks for the information. What a rare treat to have someone as knowledgeable as you talk about the Hogan brand, clubs that have a special meaning to many of us.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Hogan and having an opportunity to talk with him. I told him I had learned to play golf by reading "Five Lessons" and trying to emulate the pictures, to which he replied, "I'm glad it helped you. Welcome to our company and good luck." At the time there were four major companies, Spaldiing, Wilson, MacGregor, and Hogan. Hogan equipment was the most respected equipment on the market because people knew Hogan meant quality and value. In my territory I had 12 head pros on staff from the best, most prestigious clubs in the territory because being on the Hogan Staff was a respected position. The sales force was required to wear a coat and tie, drive a nice car, have no long hair, sideburns, or facial hair of any kind. The Hogan Company had a prestigious reputation and we were supposed to uphold it. Ben Hogan would stand for nothing less.
