On August 17, 1997, Davis Love III was his first and only major title. Love won the PGA Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. Love's 269 (-11) total was good enough to secure a 5 shot victory, as well as the $470,000 first place check.
Winged Foot Golf Club had previously hosted four major championships; all US Opens. It was a very tough test on the weekend, and after 54 holes, only two men were under par: Davis Love III and Justin Leonard. Both at -7, and both seven clear of the rest of the field. By the end of the tournament, four men were under par, and Love ran away with the title.
Over his career, Love has had 34 professional victories, including 20 on the PGA Tour. With 20 wins on the PGA Tour, Love has earned a lifetime exemption on the PGA Tour.
The PGA Championship in 1997 was his only major title, but he had close calls in other majors, with seven top 5's.
