September 3 - Today in Golf History

phil-mickelsonOn September 3, 2007, Phil Mickelson won the Deutsche Bank Championship. He beat Tiger Woods, Arron Oberholser, and Brett Wetterich to capture the title. 2007 was the first year that the PGA Tour setup the "Race for the Fedex Cup," where players compete during the regular season for a spot in the last four events of the season (the "playoffs"), culminating with the Tour Championship and the crowning of the Fedex Cup Champion.

The Deutsche Bank Championship is the second event within the FedEx playoffs.

During his career, Mickelson has won 40 PGA Tour events, including four majors. Since 1990, the first year he played in a major (US Open), he has had an incredible thirty-three top 10's at the majors.

Excluding 2012 (where he currently sits 8th), he has finished in the top 10 of the PGA Tour money list twelve times. He currently ranks third all time on the career money list, behind only Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods.
