I chose a set of Hogan PCs over Wilson Tour Blades for $340 some 25 years ago. I recently found that line of Wilsons for $40, used, in nice condition, so I hit those now. Titleist 975L-FE, Adams 3M.

So, I see Elk and the "The Big Show" are committed to play in San Antonio for the Champions Tour AT&T Championship. My advice, Elk, is that you beat Calc here, because he got a primo parking spot for his mammoth rig last year. The guys here looked like they were on a tarmac when Calc, caddy and dogs rolled into town.

  • Woodlake Golf Club, site of Ben Crenshaw's first PGA Tour win, is bankrupt and trying to stay open. If it falls, it's the second historic golf course this year in San Antonio to close -- Pecan Valley (1968 PGA Championship, Julius Boros over Bob Charles and Arnold Palmer) being the other: <a href="http://www.woai.com/news/local/story/The-drive-to-save-Woodlake-Golf-Club/WTBqzJzmXE6Z1KfRwfIaQQ.cspx">http://www.woai.com/news/local/story/The-drive-to-save-Woodlake-Golf-Club/WTBqzJzmXE6Z1KfRwfIaQQ.cspx</a>

  • Covering a high school football all-star game right now. Football is king in Texas, but I'm thinking about my round of golf tomorrow at Olmos Basin/Alamo City Golf Trail in San Antonio, Texas.

  • After planning some British golf for vacation in June, I'll think now about my participation in the next stroke-play event at our local Alamo City Golf Trail Players Club. It's Sunday at Mission Del Lago on the southern edge of San Antonio near a Toyota plant. It was designed by Denis Griffiths, who collaborated on the designs at St. Andrew's Bay resort. One more practice round to go.

Looks like I'll get a couple of rounds played during our family vacation in June while we're on a 17-day trip to Northern Ireland and the ferry over to Scotland. I'm still open on my round in Northern Ireland. I think I've got it down to the reasonable green fees at either Castle Rock or Portstewart (Portrush is too expensive). The Scotland leg of the trip is set. Since we're arriving in the Troon area and headed up to Fort William in the Highlands, I'll stop on our arrival date and play...

  • Tim Price - created a new topic One at St. Andrew's, or two others? in the forum.
I'll be vacationing in Scotland and Northern Ireland this June. I could play St. Andrew's, but I could play twice by going elsewhere cheaper and getting two rounds instead of one (although that one would be at St. Andrew's). Does anyone know anything about Castle Rock (it's on the north coast of Northern Ireland west of Portrush and Portstewart) and Machrie (it's on Islay, Scotland)? I'll be on Islay anyway, drinking single malts, so I figured it would be nice to fit in a round while I'm there.

Jim, Thanks for the comment. He was offering a free lesson through our municipal golf association (Alamo City Golf Trail) entitled "Kinetic Sequencing." Since I've just read the Ben Hogan book ("Five Lessons") and have tried to implement the chain-reaction Mr. Hogan instructs, I wanted a teacher to look at it. Mr. Freeman was happy with my swing as well. Really, all he told me to do was to bring in my stance to place my feet at shoulder width (I was way wide, even with my irons). This swing...
  • The Olympic committee in Brazil has chosen Gil Hanse (he did Castle Stuart) to design the course to be used for the 2016 Summer Games. The statement from the committee reads Hanse "tackled the challenge of designing a course for use by both elite and amateur athletes." Does this indict Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus as designers of courses that are not average golfer friendly?

Steve . I have actually never heard of the winner but today the Winner Hanse is a Grinner :)

  • This golfer thought he got hit with a golf ball during his round, then "saw a little bit of smoke coming out of my chest." He can't believe he got shot while playing golf, and neither can I. Weird. <a href="http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/article/Relief-follows-scare-on-golf-course-3382468.php">http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/article/Relief-follows-scare-on-golf-course-3382468.php</a>

This swing video reflects the narrower stance. This was a good shot, but still I am horribly inconsistent with the results -- I can't break 90 at this point.

  • I'll play a tournament in April at this course. I hope the police keep checking with the shooting range nearby (and the neighboring rancher, for that matter) to ascertain from where the stray bullet came. Here's good thoughts for the fellow hit; sounds like he's OK. <a href="http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/article/Police-identify-golfer-shot-in-chest-3382468.php">http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/article/Police-identify-golfer-shot-in-chest-3382468.php</a>

  • It'll be five weeks till I play my next round of golf (work on the book is rolling along, and I want to keep it that way). I'll hit balls at the range once a week till then, and get out to work on my short game as much as time allows. Next event on my calendar is the Alamo City Golf Trail's individual stroke play event mid April at Mission Del Lago GC (designed by Denis Griffiths).
